The former world record holder of the most-liked Instagram post of all time has been beaten- by an egg.
The stock image of an ordinary chicken egg has made global headlines for the pure simplicity and ludicrousness of the attempt. The caption stated, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most-liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
Starting out as a funny experiment, the egg quickly gained support from all over the internet. The egg, originally posted on January 5, has gained 44.5 million likes as of January 16- a space of eleven days.
The post that originally held the most likes was a picture of Jenner’s baby daughter clasping her thumb.
The phenomenon of the egg came as a surprise to the Londoner behind the scheme. According to the Telegraph, the user said the experiment started out as something funny but turned into a “whirlwind week” after thousands of “likes” poured in.
“I was sitting at home reading an article online about the top 20 Instagram posts of 2018,” he said. “I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try and beat the record with something as basic as possible, which led to me deciding on the egg.”
The egg has captured the internet by storm, with numerous memes flooding social media in reaction to it.
Jenner also posted a tongue in-cheek reaction to the news of the egg beating her record, with a video of her breaking an egg and cooking it on the pavement with the caption, “take that little egg”.
The person behind the egg experiment has even started selling merchandise, with shirts that say: I LIKED THE EGG. (Check it out here https://everpress.com/worldrecordegg)
